Although Key West is a small island, it’s known worldwide. Everyone from celebrities, authors, actors and professional sports players know of our little island. Some even decided to make Key West their home! Here is a short list of a few of the most famous Key West residents.
President Harry S. Truman
Although Harry S Truman had to spend most of this time in Washington D.C, he opted out to spend his winters in Key West, and who could blame him! The Harry S. Truman Little White House served as Truman’s residence for 175 days of his presidency from 1946 through 1952. Today, the Little White House has been turned into a museum, and you can visit it for a tour all year round. For more information visit their site here.
Hemingway is perhaps Key West’s most famous resident. The “Hemingway House” is located right in the heart of Old Town Key West, and served as his residence from 1931 to 1939. Hemingway’s house was one of the first on the island to have indoor plumbing, and the first to have a bathroom upstairs with running water from a rain cistern on the roof. Hemingway also had a swimming pool, a luxury during those times, and the only one within 100 miles of Key West at the time! Another famous author to have a home in Key West is Judy Blume. Blume is originally from New Jersey, but spends a better part of her year in Key West. Her and author husband George Cooper take great pride in the heritage of Key west, and have even opened up a bookstore! Books & Books is located at 533 Eaton Street at the Studios in Key West. Judy’s bookstore offers the latest novels, New York’s Best Sellers, and of course older classics. To learn more about Judy’s books store you can visit their site here.
Most people don’t realize that Jimmy Buffett got his musical start right here in Key West. Back in 1971 Jimmy and his friend Jerry Jeff Walker took a trip down to Key West, and Jimmy fell in love with the island. That same year he made the move down here, and began his musical career playing for drinks at The Chart Room Bar. He became a local celebrity and became a regular act in bars around town, including Captain Tony’s. Today Jimmy Buffett owns a recording studio right on the Historic Seaport.
